Low Clouds, Passing Autumn Rain, and the Sound of Gunfire!
As October deepens on Long Island, autumn colors grow richer by the day. The passing rain washes away the lingering warmth, while low hanging clouds blanket the shooting range and the damp ground reflects the quiet, subdued atmosphere characteristic of late autumn. On Friday, October 16, 2026, the New York Firearms Association, Inc. (NYFA) organized a shooting outing on Long Island, bringing together members and shooting enthusiasts for an autumn training session focused on hands on experience, technical exchange, and firearms safety education.
Upon arrival, participants organized their equipment and familiarized themselves with the range, making the necessary preparations for the day’s activities. The cool air following the rain added a refreshing touch to the outdoor training environment. As participants arrived and activities got underway, the previously quiet range gradually came to life. For those in attendance, this was more than simply an opportunity to practice at the range. It was also a valuable chance to step away from the demands of everyday life, focus on the shooting sports, and connect with fellow enthusiasts who share a common interest.
The training session featured a diverse selection of firearms, including several types of commonly used handguns. Two long guns attracted particular attention: the Escort BTS12 12 gauge bullpup semi automatic shotgun and the Ruger PC Carbine, a 9mm semi automatic pistol caliber carbine.

As gunfire echoed rhythmically across the range, participants remained focused and attentive. From listening to instructions and confirming equipment status to following established procedures, every step required patience, discipline, and attention to detail. Participants gained a deeper appreciation of an essential principle of the shooting sports: while firearms and their features may naturally attract interest, understanding their characteristics and strictly adhering to safety requirements are at the heart of responsible participation.

Outdoor activities are inevitably influenced by the weather, and the heavy clouds and damp ground provided a distinctive backdrop for this Long Island outing. With no harsh sunlight and less of the heat associated with summer, the range took on a calm and composed atmosphere quite different from that of a bright, sunny day. Yet the weather was only the backdrop. The quality of any training session ultimately depends on the attitude and conduct of those taking part. The shooting sports demand composure, strict adherence to instructions, and constant awareness of one’s surroundings and actions. From following the instructors’ directions to cooperating with on site safety personnel, every requirement serves a purpose. These procedures are not mere formalities; they are fundamental to participating in shooting activities responsibly. Through this experience, participants gained more than practical exposure to firearms. They also strengthened their understanding of established procedures, developed a greater appreciation for attention to detail, and gained a more concrete understanding of the importance of a strong safety culture.

Beyond the range activities themselves, positive interaction among members was another important aspect of the event. Training alongside one another provided opportunities to share personal experiences, exchange observations about different firearms, and learn from one another’s perspectives. For a growing organization, the value of regularly hosting activities extends beyond providing opportunities for hands on practice. Such events also establish consistent channels for communication, bringing together people with shared interests to learn, exchange knowledge, and develop a deeper understanding of the responsibilities associated with lawful firearm ownership and safe use. From practical experience on the range to discussions during breaks, these seemingly ordinary moments collectively represent the core value of NYFA’s community activities and help strengthen the bonds among its members.

As an organization committed to advancing lawful firearms rights, promoting safety education, and encouraging community engagement, NYFA continues to place a strong emphasis on firearms knowledge and responsible use. We believe that a mature and well informed firearms culture must extend beyond equipment and the enjoyment of shooting. It must be grounded in respect for the law, a clear understanding of applicable regulations, and a commitment to public safety. Through ongoing training sessions and educational exchange opportunities, NYFA seeks to provide members and shooting enthusiasts with more opportunities to learn, develop their skills, and broaden their knowledge. We encourage everyone to approach the shooting sports with a rational, disciplined, and responsible mindset, putting safety awareness into practice at every event.

Low clouds, passing autumn rain. The skies may not have cleared, but every shot fired at the range reflected a moment of concentration, dedication, and enthusiasm. As the event concluded successfully, participants took home more than memories of an autumn day on Long Island. They also carried with them the valuable lessons, shared experiences, and personal growth that come from learning and participating together. Through diverse training and community engagement activities, NYFA remains committed to fostering a healthy, mature, and responsible firearms culture making every gathering an opportunity for learning, connection, and growth.
