Late Summer, Early Autumn: More Than Shooting, Making Safety a Habit

Updated: Aug 18

As summer gradually draws to a close and autumn approaches, members of the New York Firearms Association (NYFA) spent Sunday, August 16, 2026, not indoors enjoying the air conditioning, but under the late summer sun at a Long Island shooting range. They put the safety principles they had learned in the classroom into practice, turning every rule into a real world habit on the range.

(Various Types of Firearms)

For NYFA, a range activity is never simply about the experience of shooting. It is an opportunity to combine safety awareness, proper procedures, hands on training, and member interaction. From entering the range and confirming a safe environment to proper grip, stance, aiming, and shooting, every step deserves careful attention.

This event welcomed two new faces, one of whom was stepping onto a shooting lane for the very first time. For a first time shooter, it is natural to feel nervous or unfamiliar with the process. From the initial grip and stance to aiming and shooting, each movement requires time and practice. With guidance from instructors on site, the new shooter gradually became more comfortable after several rounds of practice, with shots increasingly grouping within the target area. The improvement was clear.

For someone participating in shooting training for the first time, learning the fundamentals while following proper safety procedures is already an important accomplishment. Rather than trying to be perfect from the beginning, what matters more is developing the correct methods and gradually turning them into consistent habits through repeated practice.

NYFA honorable president Lin also attended the event and, together with Mr. Wong, Commander of the Anti-Gun Violence Patrol Unit, participated in on site instruction. They worked directly with members, patiently helping them adjust their grip, correct their stance, and understand the fundamentals of aiming and safe operation. Rather than simply being an occasion for observation, the event became an opportunity for face-to-face communication, hands on instruction, and practical training.

At the range, many movements that appear simple require repeated practice before they become natural and consistent. A proper grip, a stable stance, and a disciplined operation are all important components of safe firearm handling.

(Mr. Ho, a team member who once helped an injured person on the streets of Flushing, also came to the range and took part in the shooting training with great dedication)

NYFA hopes to provide its members with precisely this kind of safe, responsible, and step-by-step learning environment. Through proper instruction and continued training, members can gain a better understanding of firearms, develop respect for them, and appreciate the responsibility behind every safety rule.

We have always believed that what matters most is not simply learning shooting techniques, but developing strong safety awareness, knowledge of the law, and a responsible mindset. This is one of the reasons NYFA continues to organize range activities for its members. By bringing classroom safety principles into a real world environment and turning correct procedures into natural habits, NYFA strives to make safety more than a slogan, it should become part of every member’s everyday actions and mindset.

(True strength is not about intimidating others, but about being prepared to protect yourself and those around you when necessary)

The late summer sun remained warm and bright, but there was already a hint of autumn in the air. For NYFA members, the day was not only about shooting practice, but also about communication, learning, and encouraging one another. Whether experienced members or newcomers experiencing shooting for the first time, everyone came together to learn and improve in a safe, responsible, and disciplined environment.

(We come together through the sport of shooting, and move forward together with safety and responsibility)

As summer comes to an end and autumn approaches, learning has no finish line, and safety has no season. Every visit to the range is a reminder to take safety seriously and to uphold our responsibility.

We practice shooting, but we uphold safety. We improve our skills, but we carry responsibility. Every round fired on the range is not simply about shooting better, it is about becoming safer, more disciplined, and more responsible.
