NYFA Anti-Gun Violence Patrol Unit Launches 2026 Summer Youth Employment Program; Youth Participants Assist Injured Resident on Their First Patrol

July 13, 2026. The New York Firearms Association (NYFA) Anti-Gun Violence Patrol Unit officially launched its participation in the 2026 New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (NYC DYCD) Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).
This summer, several participants aged 18 and older joined the patrol unit and began serving alongside experienced volunteers in community safety patrols, public safety outreach, and community service initiatives. Through hands-on participation, the program provides young adults with valuable workplace experience while developing essential professional skills, including teamwork, communication, situational awareness, report writing, and emergency response. These experiences help prepare participants for future careers in law enforcement, fire services, emergency medical services, corrections, the military, and other public safety professions.
On the very first day of the program, the youth participants encountered a real life emergency that became an invaluable learning experience.
While conducting a scheduled patrol on Main Street in Flushing, the patrol team discovered an elderly individual who had fallen to the ground with a serious head injury and was bleeding heavily. Patrol members immediately called 911 and assisted responding police officers by helping maintain the scene, allowing emergency responders to provide timely medical assistance.
One of the newly joined participants, Mr. Ho, had previously completed first aid training. After police officers arrived, he shared his first aid knowledge with the responding officers and assisted by offering recommendations during the initial emergency care. Meanwhile, Patrol Commander Mr. Wong communicated continuously with the injured individual in Chinese, providing reassurance, encouraging the victim to remain awake and alert, and helping keep the individual calm until EMS personnel arrived. Through the coordinated efforts of the NYPD, emergency medical personnel, and NYFA patrol volunteers, the injured individual was safely transported to a hospital for further treatment.
The incident provided the youth participants with a firsthand understanding that community patrol is far more than routine observation and reporting. It also requires remaining calm during emergencies, responding quickly, and lawfully assisting law enforcement and emergency medical personnel when needed.
Through this experience, participants gained practical lessons in teamwork, decision making under pressure, and community service while developing a deeper appreciation for the responsibility and professionalism required in public service. The experience demonstrated that serving a community often begins with a timely 911 call, a reassuring conversation, and effective teamwork. It also provided valuable real world exposure for those interested in pursuing careers in law enforcement, public safety, emergency medical services, and related professions.
After the emergency response concluded, the patrol team resumed its scheduled community patrol, visiting local businesses to discuss recent public safety concerns and gather feedback from merchants and residents. These interactions help strengthen communication between the community and law enforcement while promoting continued police community partnerships aimed at creating a safer and more harmonious neighborhood.
